As students, our Beta lives are centred around our studies, but we also enjoy a rich diversity of activities that make for a well-rounded and rewarding university experience. Beta holds many events including socials with other campus groups, community service outings, road trips to other chapters in Canada and the US, alumni events where we get to know some of Ottawa’s most prominent businessmen, home improvement weekends, nights out on the town, formals, and other special events. Beta opens the door to new experiences you won’t find anywhere else. Above all, Betas are committed to friendship. It is through mutual assistance and confidence in each other that we have built a long, remarkable history of success in Ottawa and worldwide.
A great university experience goes beyond the classroom—it teaches real life. Our organizational structure provides undergraduate members with the opportunity to assume defined roles (e.g. President, Vice-President, Treasurer, etc.) similar to what you would find in a corporate setting. What’s more, Beta provides undergraduate members with mentorship from our vast alumni network to help undergraduates excel in school, Beta, and their careers. We also offer top-tier leadership training to undergraduate members that most people wouldn’t be able to access until well into their careers, if at all. The Beta Theta Pi Foundation has completed two $20-million capital campaigns to support the development of leadership and life skills in its members. With award-winning leadership programs for its undergraduates to meet and learn from fellow Betas throughout North America, Betas gain real experience that pays off after graduation.
Our “Roll of Honour”
Beta Theta Pi is well-known for its scholastic achievements, both on paper and in principle. We were the first fraternity to adopt a minimum 2.8 GPA for each member and celebrate a 3.24 fraternity-wide GPA. Beta is also proud to be the first fraternity to achieve 85 Rhodes Scholars.
We expect our members to concentrate on their schoolwork. Social events and other activities are always scheduled around scholastic achievement and we encourage each other’s scholastic success by enforcing quiet hours, conducting group study sessions, and helping each other grasp concepts learned in class.
To emphasize our devotion to scholastics, the Beta Theta Pi Foundation of Canada assists members with scholarships ranging from $500-1,000.
Throughout the school year, Beta participates in numerous social events with other groups from the campus community, sorority mixers, alumni dinners, pub nights, or road trips to any of our 140 campuses across North America. Such events are organized ahead of time and managed by a Social Chairman and other officers, who oversee the logistics of each event.
The less-publicized, but perhaps more valuable social aspect of Beta Theta Pi comes from the “off-hours” when make dinner together, watch TV, enjoy a coffee together, or meet up after class. These and other occasions are the times you’ll remember fondly as you grow older.
We take full-advantage of having an able, willing and cooperative group of young men to help those who need it. This year we participated in various philanthropy events, raising more than $10,000 for causes such as Relay for Life, Haircuts for Hodgkin’s, Man’s Not Hot (Movember) Paws for a Caws, and Pink Week.
